MERTON & EVERETT LLP

Merton & Everett LLP is Ghana’s premier public interest and corporate law firm, combining deep legal expertise with a commitment to transformative social impact. Our work spans a wide array of practice areas including complex commercial transactions, high-profile constitutional litigation, legal reform, governance advisory, and community-based legal empowerment.

As part of our commitment to shaping the next generation of brilliant and justice-oriented lawyers, we are inviting applications for the position of Trainee Associate. This is a developmental role for individuals preparing to begin their professional journey or seeking a permanent entry into long-term legal practice with us.

We are looking for exceptional candidates who are either:

  • In their final year at the Ghana School of Law, and will soon be eligible for pupillage; or
  • Recently called to the Ghana Bar and have completed pupillage, and are now seeking a full-time role with a progressive, impact-driven legal practice.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Trainee Associate position is an intensive, hands-on professional training experience. You will be integrated into active legal teams and exposed to both litigation and transactional assignments. You will learn through doing — drafting, researching, analysing, collaborating, observing proceedings, and participating in strategy sessions.

You’ll be supported by experienced lawyers, receive structured mentorship, and be expected to engage actively in client work, legal and policy research, as well as the firm’s internal learning environment.

This is more than a job — it’s a growth opportunity designed to build lawyers who are not just technically competent, but socially aware, ethically grounded, and professionally excellent.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct high-quality legal research on statutory, constitutional, regulatory, and case law matters.
  • Draft pleadings, affidavits, legal opinions, contracts, and policy documents.
  • Assist lawyers in court proceedings, client meetings, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Contribute to due diligence processes in commercial and regulatory transactions.
  • Support the firm’s legal reform, public interest litigation, and civic empowerment work.
  • Participate in internal moot courts, knowledge-sharing sessions, and legal drafting clinics.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and case files in line with the firm’s case management systems.
  • Carry out any additional tasks as assigned by team leads or partners in furtherance of the firm’s work.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for candidates who are not only academically strong but also exhibit a commitment to learning, a deep sense of responsibility, and a clear alignment with the values that shape our work.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Final-year student at the Ghana School of Law, OR
  • Recently called to the Ghana Bar and completed pupillage.
  • Excellent writing, research, and legal reasoning skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in litigation, public law, human rights, or corporate practice.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • High level of organisation, attention to detail, and accountability.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative legal team.

Bonus Attributes:

    • Prior experience through internships or volunteer work in legal or advocacy settings.
    • Interest in law and development, governance reform, or civil society engagement.
    • Familiarity with legal technology tools and modern research databases.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • A rigorous, structured learning experience with clear supervision and feedback.
  • Exposure to some of the most high-profile and socially significant legal work in Ghana.
  • An intellectually rich and inclusive workplace culture that values curiosity, initiative, and critical thinking.
  • Regular training sessions, internal workshops, and mentorship opportunities.
  • A clear path to career progression within a growing and innovative law firm.
  • Opportunities to contribute to meaningful impact beyond the courtroom.
